He helps Cloud and his party in their quest to save the Planet with his wisdom and knowledge. Red XIII affectionately refers to Bugenhagen as his "grandfather", although obviously not in a literal sense. Bugenhagen travels upon a levitating green orb. He mentions he'll be 130 years old at his next birthday.

Bugenhagen's special insight may be due to his balanced interest in both machines and nature, as well as realizing humanity's often small importance in the grand scheme of things.

Bugenhagen is sapient and he has a thirst for knowledge, his specialty subject being the the Planet Gaia and its workings. He opposes Shinra Electric Power Company's activities in harvesting the Lifestream for Mako energy, as the Lifestream is the Planet's life source. Bugenhagen is protective towards Red XIII, for whom he is a father figure.

Save Point, but in noodles. The save point (セーブポイント, Sēbu Pointo) is used in addition to inns as a place to save and heal a party's MP and HP. The world map tends to be one huge save point, as it is possible to save at any time while on the map; however, towns and dungeons have specific save points which are clearly marked, which the player must activate either by touching them or standing on them.

The save point appears shaped as a purple/green floating "C" letter (standing for "Checkpoint") with a green fire base. It can be used by moving the character onto it and opening up the menu when a little box appears.

The save point glitch can be performed to fool the game to think the player is on a save point when they aren't, essentially letting the player save their game almost anywhere on the field.

The item Save Crystal lets the player make a save point anywhere in the Northern Cave, although this can be dangerous as the feature is bugged.

The Highwind can be used to ram into Ultimate Weapon to make it stop fleeing and fight. In some battles with the Ultimate Weapon, the deck is used as the battleground. The airship is also used as a part of Cid's Limit Break Highwind, in which the Highwind rains 18 missiles down on random targets.

“And then, it came -- the chosen day. In the end, the planet itself had to make the battles stop for good. The planet used the Lifestream as a weapon, and when it burst out of the earth ... all the fighting, all the grief and sadness ... everything was washed away.” - Marlene Wallace
